Abbreviations, acronyms and annoyances

Someone left a comment, anonymously, on one of my posts the other day. They told me that "by the way" should be "btw".

Regular readers will undoubtedly have noticed that I tend not to use abbreviations, shortcuts and acronyms. Many people are new to blog reading and would be totally confused by LOL, DH, IMHO etc. In addition, LOL really irritates me!

There's a great thread on Ravelry where people post about things that bug them on forums in general. It's good to see that other people (not just me) are annoyed by crappy spelling and grammar!

TTYL!

It annoys me too. I know I often make mistakes (spelling is not my strong point) but I hate it when people won't use capital letters for names and at the beginning of sentences or they won't use commas and full stops.
LOL irritates me as well.

Please excuse any spelling mistakes.
Susan.

Ha!

I was about to post that I sometimes don't bother with apostrophe's and capitalizing and then I read the above comment. The acronyms do bother me too. Especially ones where I have no idea what they mean :)

I use a few acronyms (IMO because I am SO opinionated and IRL because my life is SO unreal) but I always feel such a fraud using ones like LOL and DH (I never call him my "dear" husband IRL so why should I call him that on the internet?). The one phrase I hate the most (don't hold back, Sheila, tell us how you really feel) is "thinking outside the box." Ugh ugh and ugh some more. I didn't know I WAS in a box until you mentioned it. Wait, and "signage" really bugs me too (it seems to bug your spellcheck as well).

I'm on a lot of homeschool Yahoo! groups and everyone uses the abbreviations for curriculum. Less typing. I can tell it bugs those new to the lists, but eventually they too get sucked into the Abbreviation Vortex.

Nicola, you never mentioned those little emoticons. You know - the little faces that smile or grimace or groan, depending.

TTFN!

And notice how much of the comments approving abbreviations and acronyms are anonymous. If this weird new written language is so great, why not stand up for it?!
English is my second language and I'm always trying to keep up with vocabulary, specially with the specific ones (crafts, sewing, etc) and I end up not understanding half of the acronyms and abreviations anyway. (TTFN?!)

I watched news program the other night about how to keep healthy by not eating anything your great grandmother wouldnt recognize. It tickled my funny bone to think what my great grandmother would say if I sent her a message with:

OMG! WTF?? Can you believe it? I was ROFLMAO!! My BFF and my DH had fun! LOL!! TTYL!

Sorry- had to add that.

PS- I am all about the smiley faces because sometimes my comments can come across as sarcastic so it is my way of letting someone know it is tongue in cheek.

You've probably noticed I don't use abbreviations on my comments. It took me ages to work out what LOL meant, and I still couldn't say what your other abbreviations stand for? I am quite good at spelling, but I think my grammar slips up now and then. x
